What is World Animal Day?
World Animal Day is a day that aims to improve the status of animals and their welfare standards globally. Ultimately, it is about making the world a more fair place for them.
This years theme is Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet.
How did it begin?
This day began on the 24th of March 1925 in Berlin, Germany. Cynologist, Heinrich Zimmermann, created the first World Animal Day at the Sport Palace to raise awareness about the welfare of animals. More than 5000 people attended the first event to support his cause.
Who was Heinrich Zimmermann?
He was a journalist and animal protection activist who lived from 1887 to 1942.
‘He was a key organizer for the movement for the prevention of cruelty to animals movement and the publisher of the magazine Mensch und Hund/Man and Dog with new issues every two weeks. Heinrich used the magazine to promote the welfare of animals to the general public and established a World Animal Day Committee.’

Why is it important?
This celebratory day reminds us of how animals enhance our daily lives.
Historically, social movements have empowered people to fight to change the world and find social justice. Animals are significantly impacted by our actions as well as those from other countries and businesses. They do not have a voice and therefore we must speak for them. This means that it is vital that we protect them at all costs. World Animal Day puts animal news and rights at the forefront of human publications. It allows us to educate others and encourage a kind culture where animals can live in a just and fair world. This world is one in which all creatures are given equal treatment and the care they deserve.
